Tom has been an avid fisherman since his neighbor took him fishing when he was eight years old. He spent most of the time retrieving lures from the trees until he learned the art of casting. Tom spent several years as a Charter Captain running near and offshore charters and tournament fishing. He now concentrates on inshore and bass fishing in Southeastern North Carolina.
His interest in rod building started when he had a local rod builder and charter captain, Luke Donat make his first custom rod several years ago. Luke has been a great mentor.

At Slam Custom Rods, we only offer the best products from the top brands in the rod bulding industry. We know that having the right gear can make all the difference when you're out on the water, so we've carefully curated our selection to ensure that every product we offer is of the highest quality.
Designing a custom fishing rod involves several important considerations to ensure that the finished product meets your needs and preferences. Here are some key design considerations:
1. Fishing Technique and Target Species: Consider the specific fishing technique you'll be using (e.g., spinning, casting, fly fishing) and the species you'll be targeting. Different techniques and species may require rods with specific characteristics such as length, power, and action.
2. Rod Blank Material: The material of the rod blank will impact its performance. Common materials include fiberglass, graphite, and composite blends. Each material has its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of sensitivity, durability, and flexibility.
3. Length: The length of the rod can affect casting distance, accuracy, and leverage when fighting fish. Choose a length that matches your fishing style and environment. Longer rods typically provide greater casting distance, while shorter rods offer more precise control in tight spaces.
4. Power: Rod power refers to its lifting strength or the amount of force needed to bend the rod. Power options typically range from ultralight to extra heavy, with variations in between. Consider the size and weight of the fish you'll be targeting when selecting the power of your rod.
5. Action: Action describes how much the rod bends and where along the blank it flexes when pressure is applied. Common action types include fast, medium, and slow. Fast-action rods bend primarily near the tip, providing greater sensitivity and quicker hook sets, while slow-action rods bend throughout the blank, offering more forgiveness and control.
6. Guides: Choose guides that are appropriate for the type of fishing line you'll be using (e.g., monofilament, braided, or fluorocarbon). The size, material, and placement of guides can affect casting distance, line control, and overall rod performance.
7. Reel Seat: The reel seat holds the fishing reel in place and should be compatible with the size and type of reel you'll be using. Consider the material, ergonomics, and durability of the reel seat when making your selection.
8. Handle/Grip: The handle or grip of the rod should provide comfort and control during extended fishing sessions. Common materials include cork, EVA foam, and synthetic blends. Choose a handle style and material that feels comfortable in your hand and provides adequate grip in wet conditions.
9. Aesthetics: While not essential to the performance of the rod, aesthetics play a role in the overall design. Consider options for thread colors, decorative wraps, custom decals, and trim pieces to personalize your rod and make it visually appealing.
10. Budget: Finally, consider your budget when selecting components and materials for your custom rod. High-quality components may come with a higher price tag, but they can also contribute to improved performance and durability in the long run.
By carefully considering these design factors, you can create a custom fishing rod that meets your specific needs, preferences, and fishing style.
